What is image tagging?

Basically, when you tag an image you are linking one or mere text description with the image file specifying sort of zones on images that descriptions belongs to. This means that the image can me more accurately searched by search engines and be more descriptive to the human. If you think of the image’s filename (e.g. mickie-august-2008.jpg) as a piece of description, then every digital image travels with at least some description not always relevant by the way. By tagging an image you can embed a much broader and richer range of information into the image, which could include anything from technical details, to copyright information, keywords, dates, full description and photographer details.

Traditionally this kind of information is stored in the the website database, enabling to search and retrieve images based on its data, but when you come to take an image away from a website (e.g. by downloading it, burning it to CD-R or emailing it) you only get the image itself – the data stays in the website database, and you either have to export it separately or copy it and marry it up with the image later. This way you can take advantages for instance blind copy paste will not work for image stiller. If the image is removed from the album and the information is left behind.
